Walden Winter Carnival

This year’s Walden run reminded us of the awesome power of mother nature. Old man winter has hammered us pretty hard this year but it didn’t put a damper on the January Club run to the sand hills near Walden, Colorado. Considering the bad roads and dicey weather, we had a great turnout. There were well over 20 rigs of all shapes and sizes blasting through as much snow as they could handle. This run has become very popular even outside RC4W. We always have a lot of guests and onlookers who know we’re going to be there and they come up to play and to watch. Club members on this run were: Zach Martin, Chris Ladd, Paul Bickerton, Marlon Seals, John Stone, Craig Gobel, Steve Wykoff, Howard Segal, Dewey Williams and Rod Pepper. And, of course, the families and lots of kids (both big and little!) The weather at the sand hills was actually relatively mild. Temps in the high teens to mid 20’s. That is the most snow I’ve seen up there in 20 years!

We played on the North hill, the middle bowl area, and out on the flats toward the “Creek”. We also played in the trees up towards our old camp area and the Big Bowl before low fuel started plaguing several of us and we began to retreat towards the trailers. The snow was really deep, so it was just pretty much hammer down all the time. But, what a hoot! Marlon and Christina Seals were having an above average good time with their new 600 horsepower motor and 46” tires! But, stuck is stuck, and that Jeep makes some BIG holes! I was just as happy as if I had a brain, my Jeep actually made it back onto the trailer under it’s own power this time. And, it didn’t get babied! I got stuck so bad my 42” tires disappeared!

Chris Ladd was probably giving the best rides of the carnival. He tied a large tube behind his Bronco and gave all the kids a wild ride around the North Hill area. They caught the most air and the highest speed of any of us all day long. On one high speed turn, Tyler Wykoff lost the handle and went flying off the tube, only to lay in the snow for what seemed like forever. He then wanted Chris to get on the tube and HE would drive! Sounds fair!

Everyone started trickling out of the area close to dark. Howard Segal was the one this time who got towed back to his trailer and then had to winch on. Thanks for taking the heat off me, Howard! His problem, however, was just a fuel system glitch and not holes in the block!

As we all motored towards home, about 10 or 12 of us stopped for dinner at Wingers in Laramie. It has become an RC4W tradition for runs west of Laramie.

All in all just another outstanding day, playing in the backcountry with the Rough Country 4 Wheelers!

        Happy Trails, Rod
